Part 1 of 5 - How to Make Better Decisions - BBC Horizon
We are bad at making decisions. According to science, our decisions are based on oversimplification, laziness and prejudice. And that's assuming that we haven't already been hijacked by our surroundings or led astray by our subconscious! Featuring exclusive footage of experiments that show how our choices can be confounded by temperature, warped by post-rationalisation and even manipulated by the future, Horizon presents a guide to better decision making, and introduces you to Mathematician Garth Sundem, who is convinced that conclusions can best be reached using simple maths and a pencil!

Information Seeking, Visualization, and Decision-Making
Information Seeking, Visualization, and Decision-Making
Google Tech Talks August 27, 2008 ABSTRACT Delivering the right information to the "right people in the right time" for responding to extreme events has become increasingly difficult due to the explosion of information and the increasing severity of these events' impacts. Drawing from studies about effective human team performance and theories about human decision making under time stress, we have developed a cognitive agent architecture inspired by Recognition-Primed Decision (RPD), which is a naturalistic decision making model. The RPD model provides the context of decision-making, from which the agent dynamically identifies relevant information, proactively seek and share them among a distributed decision-making team for damage assessments and resource allocations. Speaker: Dr. John Yen Associate Dean for Research and Graduate Programs, University Professor of Information Sciences and Technology, College of Information Sciences and Technology, The Pennsylvania State University. Dr. John Yen received his BS in Electrical Engineering from National Taiwan University, Taipei, Taiwan in 1980, his MS in Computer Science from University of Santa Clara, CA in 1982, and his Ph.D. in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley in 1986. Mastering the Art of Decision-Making
Mastering the Art of Decision-Making
By the time theyve reached their final semester before graduating, Business Management majors have absorbed an enormous amount of knowledge from their coursework. Joel Evans goal is to help those students use their knowledge to make sound decisions. That is the objective of Managerial Decision-Making, a capstone course that synthesizes virtually everything Business Management students have learned in their first and second years, according to Evans, a lecturer in both the Business Management and Development Skills Departments. A case study approach The course is based primarily on case studies of typical management problems in every conceivable area, from sales and marketing to human resources, he says. Students learn to identify the problem, propose a solution and then justify it, Why a separate course on decision-making? Managers are often afraid to make decisions, especially in the current business climate, Evans says. In some cases, they will recognize a problem but back off from making a decision in the expectation that the problem, if left alone, will solve itself—which is often a mistake. While making a decision in and of itself isnt necessarily difficult, he adds, the challenge we address in the course is how to justify the decision and make it meaningful to the business. Ultimately, he says, what we want is for students to have the courage to make a decision—and, ideally, to have the resources to make the right decision at the right time.
